-I went into this trying to think outside the box. I usually don’t incorporate trades but this I figured why not. There are always going to be players that drop farther than you think and players picked higher than they were projected.

-Why?: There are a few reasons, first and foremost he provides for an area of need that the Bills have to shore up and that’s the pass rush. Ideally they would like to get it from a 3 tech DT but I don’t think they are completely married to that heading into the draft. J.Allen would provide an instant needed boost in that area and get a jump start on a position of need after the 2019 season. Also, he made a top 30 visit and I think that’s important when looking at where they might go in round 1

-The Move: I know most fans don’t want to move up and fundamentally I don’t think the Bills do either. That said I think Beane will be aggressive if he sees a blue chip player come within his striking distance. It’s not a major move either so the cost should be limited.

-The Fit: Most have J.Allen pegged as a 3-4 OLB and prior to this year I would have agreed. This year though he added weight to get to 262 to handle the run better and it showed. Its still a work in progress but he carried they weight well. I think he is more of a fit in a 4-3 than he is given credit for.

-The others:

+J.Williams: He would be in heavy consideration if he would make it to the Bills but Getting by the Jaguars at 7 I don’t think is likely if the Giants pass him at 6

+C.Wilkins: If the Bills stay at 9 I think he is the pick. He has everything they want on and off the field and I’ve been a big fan of his for years.

+TJ Hockenson: He has a big fan following but I’m not sure the Bills think TE is as big a need as the fans and media want them to think it is

+DK Metcalf/A.Dillard: If the Bills move down into the teens I think one of these two are the targets

+D.Samuel/AJ Brown/N.Fant/D.Risner: If the Bills move deep into the 20’s either by down from 9 or up from round 2 I think these 4 are the targets

-One final thought: If the Bills do go defense in round one I expect them to go right back to loading up the offense with their next 3 picks.

1.Arizona: Kyler Murray, QB, Oklahoma- Where there is smoke there is fire I guess. I wouldn’t agree with bailing on Rosen so fast but I do respect the fact that they are not afraid to pull the trigger, most would not

2.San Francisco: Nick Bosa, Edge, Ohio State- I still think Bosa is the pick, Dee Ford on one side and Nick Bosa on the other could cause opposing teams a lot of problems

3.New York Jets: Quinnen Williams, DL, Alabama- They are going to want to move back but I don’t think they will be able to pass up the talent that lands in their lap.

4.Oakland: Drew Lock, QB, Missouri- For no other reason than I can see Gruden being really high on him

5.Tampa Bay: Josh Allen, Edge, Kentucky- Allen fits very well with what Bowles will implement

6.New York Giants: Montez Sweat, DL, Mississippi State- Gettleman comes from the old school, and with that in mind when you can get a player with Sweat’s measurable and production GM’s with that mentality are going to take those players

7.Jacksonville: Jawaan Taylor, OT, Florida- Keeping your new found QB upright and adding an absolute hammer in the run game makes a lot of sense

8.Detroit: Ed Oliver, DL, Houston- They added the edge rush now I think they add the interior rush

9.Buffalo: Christian Wilkins, DL, Clemson

So I think this comes down to Wilkins and J.Williams. Both make a lot of sense and I do not think the Bills couldn’t go wrong with either one. J.Williams could be the last piece to a completely overhauled OL and the fact that he could play anywhere instantly has a tremendous amount of appeal

That Said, I do think the Bills will turn their attention to the defensive side of the ball. The Bills have been preaching about winning up front on both sides of the ball which is music to the ears for a lot of fans because while often preached it is not always executed. I do think the Bills are firm believers in it and it showed during Free Agency with the amount of money they spent on the OL. I think the practice will continue on the DL in the draft

If you follow me on Twitter you have inevitably read within the last 2 years a tweet, or two, or twenty where I say that Wilkins and the Bills are about as an ideal match as you can get. Wilkins is a player I have said multiple times I can see McDermott being completely enamored with. On and off the field and in the community he is what you would like to see in a player. He’s basically Kyle Williams

With that in mind I’ll stay on the field. The 3-tech positions can be tough to unearth because of the athletic ability and play to play effort it takes. The Bills currently do not have a true 3-tech sitting on their roster right now and Wilkins could be slotted in from day 1 and have an immediate impact. He has been a rock on the Clemson defense for 3 straight years. It would also have the Bills locked into 3 good DT’s for at least another 3 years and possible 4 DT’s depending on the future of Jordan Phillips after this year.

Having that middle solidified is very important for the Bills as they want to be able to keep their 2 Star LB’s clean on as many plays as possible. It also allows them to get into beneficial matchups on the edge where the Bills may need to overhaul next year. If you can be solid up the middle it will buy some time on a possible youth movement on the edges of the defense

Overall I’ve been a big fan of Wilkins for a while now so I would be happy with the selection. I think he would quickly become a fan favorite because as I said before he is essentially a Kyle Williams clone and a Lot of fans and the franchise would sign up for a decade or more of that type of player
